Why spring is the best outing season
After months of indoor evenings, your body picks up on spring quality. That's not just a feeling: being outdoors lowers cortisol levels, stimulates creativity and improves mood — effects that are amplified when combined with company.
Spring in the Netherlands is also uniquely short and intense: blossom season lasts 3–4 weeks, the Bollenstreek is in full bloom for only 6 weeks, and summer peak season hasn't started yet. Based on 750+ Toudou outings, May consistently rates as the most satisfying outing month.
Seven spring outings with specific tips
1. Blossom walk with picnic
Amsterdamse Bos (Bospad Bloesembomen), Park Frankendael (east Amsterdam), Máximapark in Utrecht and Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam are the most photogenic options. Free access, no reservation needed. Bring a blanket and picnic from home. Cost: €5–15 depending on what you bring.
2. Cycling through the Bollenstreek
Between late March and mid-May the Bollenstreek is in full bloom. A bike ride from Lisse to Noordwijk (about 25 km, flat) takes you past endless tulip fields, daffodils and hyacinths. Stop at a farm flower market or terrace in Noordwijk aan Zee. Bike rental in Lisse: €12–18 per day.
3. Kayaking or SUP on the canals
Utrecht, Leiden, Delft and Haarlem have the best canals for SUP and kayak. Rental opens from approximately April 15. Half-day rental: €15–25 p.p. No experience needed for SUP on canals — calmer water than rivers, instructions included with rental.
4. Pick-your-own farm or urban garden
Pick-your-own strawberries, asparagus, radishes or gooseberries are available April–June. Pick-your-own farms in Westland, urban farms in Amsterdam-Noord and Groene Hart locations offer half-day experiences with a workshop element. Cost: €15–25 p.p.
5. Outdoor cinema or sunset session
From April the first outdoor cinemas open. Pllek (Amsterdam Noord), TivoliVredenburg terrace (Utrecht) and Dakpark (Rotterdam) combine film or music with a setting sun. Bring a blanket — it's spring, not summer. Cost: €0–18 p.p.
6. Birdwatching in the Biesbosch
For those seeking calm: spring migration (March–April) brings rare birds back. The Biesbosch and Oostvaardersplassen are spectacular in this season. Not a birdwatcher? Doesn't matter — it's about silence, water and discovering something together that you normally miss. Boat rental Biesbosch: €35–55 per boat per hour.
7. Surprise outing via Toudou
Don't feel like planning? Let Toudou put together a spring-specific outing. You indicate what you enjoy and when you're available — the rest stays a surprise. Available in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam. Budget: €25–55 p.p.
