Hidden gems in the Netherlands: local experiences worth planning

The Netherlands is full of venues and experiences most people know about but never actually visit. These are the local outings most recommended by Toudou guests — by category and by city.

    Why you're underestimating the Netherlands

Most people living in the Netherlands know a fraction of what it has to offer. Not because they're not interested, but because there's always "some other time" — until you no longer live there and look back at everything you missed.

Based on 750+ Toudou outings in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam, we consistently see the same thing: when people receive a surprise outing to a place in their own city they've never been to, that's consistently the highest-scoring category. Not an expensive trip, not an exclusive restaurant — a place five kilometres away.

    Hidden culinary gems

    Amsterdam

    • Jordaan wine cellars: several properties along the Prinsengracht have cellars used as private tasting rooms. Not on Google Maps, but accessible through culinary tours.
    • NDSM wharf (Amsterdam-Noord): a creative industrial area with food spots tourists don't find — and locals forget to visit.
    • Pop-up dinners in studios: Amsterdam-Oost and Noord have a circuit of rotating cooking studios and atelier dinners that change location monthly.

    Utrecht

    • Werfkelders (canal cellars) on the Oudegracht: bars and restaurants at water level along the canal, with terraces on the water. Unique in Europe and still underappreciated by most locals.
    • Craft breweries and jenever houses: Utrecht has a growing craft drinks scene around the Twijnstraat area.

    Rotterdam

    • Katendrecht ("de Kaap"): former harbour district, now one of the most diverse food and nightlife areas in the Netherlands. Locals know it; tourists rarely get there.
    • Markthal area culinary tours: not the Markthal itself, but the providers around it running tasting tours.

    Nature closer than you think

The Netherlands is small but has more nature per square kilometre than most Europeans expect.

    • National Park De Biesbosch (1.5 hrs from Utrecht): a delta area with kayak routes, birds and almost no tourists outside peak season.
    • Utrechtse Heuvelrug (near Zeist and Driebergen): 20 minutes from Utrecht, walking routes through heathland and forest that feel like another country.
    • Kralingse Plas (Rotterdam): an hour of paddling or kayaking, in the middle of the city.
    • Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen: 30 minutes from Amsterdam, accessible for walkers and almost unknown.

Cultural experiences that keep ending up on your list

    • Domplein Utrecht guided tour with access to Roman castellum remains — underground, literally.
    • Amsterdam-Noord studio route: every November artists open their studios. Free access, completely different from a museum visit.
    • Kinderdijk windmills: UNESCO heritage, 45 minutes from Rotterdam, still never visited by roughly half the Dutch population.
    • Caves of Valkenburg: 2 hours from the Randstad, impressive and completely different from anything in western Netherlands.

Active experiences in your own city

    • City paddleboarding: Amsterdam and Utrecht both have multiple spots to rent a SUP and paddle through the canals. Rarely tried by locals.
    • Urban climbing gyms: Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam all have climbing gyms within walking distance of the city centre.
    • Urban escape games: not a small room but the entire city as a playing field. Toudou organises these as surprise outings — you only find out what you're doing when you arrive.

    Frequently asked questions

Are local outings cheaper than a trip abroad?

Almost always. No flights, no hotels, no travel time. A good local outing costs €25–60 per person for half a day including an activity and a drink. That's less than a single flight.

What are the best Dutch cities for a day trip?

Utrecht is the most underrated — compact, lots to do, easy to reach. Groningen is an excellent day trip from the Randstad. Maastricht feels like abroad without a passport. Middelburg is small but surprisingly rich in character.
