The Netherlands in May is genuinely beautiful — blossom routes, cycling, kayaking and city festivals. Here's what's worth doing and what it costs.

Why the May break in the Netherlands is underrated
The last week of April and first two weeks of May are among the best weeks of the year in the Netherlands. Blossom season peaks. Temperatures are ideal for cycling and outdoor activities. Cities host Liberation Day (5 May) markets and events. And unlike summer, it's not yet peak tourist season — venues have space and prices are normal.
Based on 750+ Toudou bookings, May consistently generates the most positive outing feedback of any month. The combination of good weather, low crowds and high seasonal interest (blossom, new life, King's Day atmosphere) makes it unusually easy to have a genuinely good day.
Best May break activities
Blossom routes and cycling
The fruit blossom in the Betuwe region (between Tiel and Buren) is at its best in late April and early May depending on the year. Routes are free, accessible by bike from Utrecht or by train to Tiel, and visually one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the Netherlands. Cycle and stop at one of the farms or cafés in Buren or Culemborg.
Keukenhof and bulb fields
Keukenhof near Lisse is open only through mid-May. The bulb flower fields along the N208 between Lisse and Hillegom are free to view from the road — you don't need to buy Keukenhof tickets to see them. If you do visit Keukenhof, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning to avoid weekend crowds. Tickets: €21 adults.
Kayaking and water routes
May is the ideal kayak month — water is still quiet, weather is pleasant, no summer heat. The Vecht river between Loenen and Breukelen, the Rottemeren near Rotterdam, and the Ankeveense Plassen near Hilversum are all accessible and beautiful. Half-day rental: €15–25 p.p.
City festivals around Liberation Day
5 May (Liberation Day) brings free festivals to most Dutch cities. Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Haarlem and Den Haag all have outdoor stages and markets. Free entry. A good base for a longer day out.
May break options for families with children
Children's workshops (pottery, cooking, art) run in most cities during school holiday weeks. Pretpark Efteling (Kaatsheuvel) and Archeon (Alphen aan den Rijn) are popular family day trips. Nature areas like the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Nationaal Park De Maasduinen have dedicated children's routes.
Frequently asked questions
When exactly is the May break in the Netherlands?
The May break (meivakantie) typically runs from around April 26 through May 10, covering King's Day (27 April) and Liberation Day (5 May). Exact dates vary slightly by region.
Is King's Day a good day for an outing?
King's Day (27 April) is great if you want city atmosphere — Amsterdam's Jordaan and Utrecht's Oudegracht are legendary. It can feel overwhelming for quiet outings. For a peaceful May outing, choose the days between King's Day and Liberation Day — quieter and still beautiful weather.
