The Jordaan is the go-to for a reason — but skip the tourist part near Anne Frank House and head to the quieter streets around Elandsgracht or the Negen Straatjes. Grab coffee at Lot Sixty One on Kinkerstraat (one of the best in the city, and a great talking point), then wander without a plan.

If the weather's good, end up at the Westerpark — huge, green, with a food hall (Westergas) if you want to extend into lunch or a drink.

Avoid: starting at Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein. Too busy, too much noise, too much pressure.

The neighbourhood explorer

Best for: both curious about the city, or one wants to show it off

Pick De Pijp and make it a food tour. Start at the Albert Cuyp Market for stroopwafels and cheese, then walk south toward Sarphatipark (Amsterdam's underrated little gem — far fewer tourists than Vondelpark). There are great spots for a drink along Gerard Doustraat afterward.

Alternatively: Noord. Take the free ferry behind Centraal Station and you're suddenly in a completely different Amsterdam — industrial, creative, unexpected. Grab lunch at NDSM Wharf or coffee at Pllek with a view of the IJ. It's a great conversation starter in itself.

Best for: people who feel more comfortable moving than sitting

Rent bikes and skip the tourist routes. Head west along the Haarlemmerweg toward the Westerpark, or go east through Oost toward the Flevopark — both are local, calm, and give you a shared mission. Cycling side by side takes pressure off eye contact, which is exactly what a first date needs.

For something quirkier: Foam Photography Museum in the canal belt is small, always has a good exhibition, and doesn't take hours. You can be in and out in 90 minutes with plenty to talk about.

If you want classic: the Rijksmuseum gardens are free and beautiful for a walk, even if you skip the museum itself.

Avoid: the Van Gogh Museum on a first date. It's crowded, you'll queue, and the noise kills any real conversation.
